How to Use Disruptive Innovation to Your Advantage

Change is inevitable and necessary.

As a middle school graphic design teacher, I preach CHANGE and FLUIDITY to my students daily. Working in an industry like tech or digital design, it is vital to understand that the landscape of our field is constantly changing. What I teach my students about change is that is it implemented to make things easier.

I believe my district is doing a great job of implementing technology such as smart boards, one-to-one laptops for all students, etc. But as Michael Horn made clear in the Disrupting Class-Part 4: Blended Learning video these items don't make up blended learning. They are definitely tools for our students and teachers to use, but how are we making the lessons and student outcomes more flexible and individualized for the student?

As I plan for the 2022-2023 school year there are a few items I want to introduce into my classroom that will make the learning environment inside and outside of room C222 more relatable and accessible for my students. The first thing, and I think the most exciting, is creating a class Instagram page. I know some teachers may already be using this social media platform, but it was a fight for me to be able to do this in my district. I think incorporating Instagram in my classroom creates more relevancy and interaction for my students.

I think the world and classrooms are prepared for disruptive innovation, but we have to ensure the buy-in valuable to all involved.
